Belay Certification

Belaying refers to a variety of techniques climbers use to exert friction on a climbing rope so that a falling climber does not fall very far. A climbing partner typically takes up the slack in the rope while the climber continues to climb. The partner then applies friction at the other end of the rope to stop the climber and then removes the friction from the rope whenever the climber needs more rope to continue climbing.

Our trained adventure staff teach classes in proper belay techniques to our older campers or other staff who want to become certified belayers. Taking the class does not guarantee certification. Campers or staff must pass the belay certification test and then they are added into the database and receive a wrist band indicating that they are belay certified.
